Are you ready to pull out your swimsuit and head for the beach? Did you remember to wax and shave? Have you considered laser hair removal? According to the American Academy for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, laser hair removal is gaining in popularity. It is now the third most popular aesthetic procedure in the country. Doctors perform this treatment more than 1.2 million times per year.
You can achieve permanent hair reduction on any area of your body with laser hair removal. Large areas can be treated each session and there is little, to no, irritation. You can expect 4 to 6 treatments for complete and permanent hair reduction.
Hair removal lasers destroy the root (or hair follicle) by targeting the dark pigment in the hair. Laser hair removal works best on patients with dark hair and light skin. Although we can treat patients who have darker skin, laser hair removal is not a good choice for blonde, red, gray or white hair. The laser is designed to destroy the hair root to keep it from growing anymore hair without irritation to the skin surrounding the hair shaft.
The laser hair removal procedure has 4 basic steps:
- Cooling. A clear gel is applied to cool the skin, which acts as a protective barrier. The gel also absorbs and spreads the cold air that is blown onto the skin from our air chiller. This makes each treatment more comfortable.
- Heating. The laser beam is transformed into heat once it hits the air. The laser is attracted to the pigment of the hair shaft.
- Targeting. This heat is then absorbed in the shaft and taken to the hair follicle, which destroys the root of the hair without irritating the surrounding tissues.
- Removal. The targeted hair will sometimes immediately fall out, but usually the hair will fall out eventually and, because the root has been disrupted by the laser, no new hair will grow in behind it. This leaves the skin silky smooth and hair free.
Although very rare, laser hair removal treatment can sometimes cause blistering, discoloration, swelling, redness and scarring. You should use hydrating lotions, sunscreen and make it a point to stay out of the sun for at least 24-hours after your session.
Laser hair removal is quick, safe, effective, comfortable and affordable. When you compare it to the nuisance of shaving or the pain of waxing, epilating, and electrolysis laser hair removal comes out on top every time. No other method will give you permanent reduction. Over time the other methods cost more than laser hair removal and waxing, epilating and electrolysis are far more painful that laser therapy. If you are serious about smooth, hairless skin, laser hair removal is definitely your best option.
