Summer is over and cold weather is on it’s way. You may think that gives you an excuse to hide your body and skip your next workout. Well, think again! You worked your butt off (literally) all summer long so don’t let your rock hard body go soft! Sure the weather may tempt you to cheat, but don’t give in. Here are some Fall fit-tips to keep you going when the going gets tough.
Change is good: Change with the season and you will be fine. You need to switch up your exercise routine anyway and there’s no time like the present. Look, everything gets a little stale after a while. If you notice you are not putting the same effort into your “usual” routine, try something new. You don’t have to be a cross-fit junkie to use the tools around you. Go for a hike, add some push-ups, go to the high school and do some stadiums, ride a bike, take a swim, or hit the weights. Mixing it up is the best way to get through the cold and darkness that’s ahead.
Sign up for a road race: This is a great way to keep you honest on your workouts. It’s a heck-uv-alot easier to skip a workout when there is no looming deadline ahead of you. But when you’ve got to perform you know that you’ve got to prepare. No matter how many times you cheat that race date doesn’t move. Not letting yourself down is pretty big motivator to keep you exercising.
Cold and Dark? No thank you! It’s great to work out in the mornings or evenings when it’s warm outside, but cold and darkness can easily keep you from getting your foot out the door in cooler months. Make time for occasional lunch-time or afternoon runs or workouts. These will not only keep you warmer, but will also keep you safe because traffic can see you in the daytime. Safe and warm is the only way to be!
Plan ahead: Watch the weather forecasts. Know what you are getting into. Wear warm clothes, but be sure to layer. That way, if you overdo it and get too hot, you can always lower the temperature by stripping down a layer or two.
Drink Plenty of Water: Even if you aren’t sweating, you need to replace body fluids by drinking water. If you are breathing heavily, you need to drink water. If you see condensation coming out of your mouth when you breathe, you need to drink water. And of course…if you are sweating….YOU NEED TO DRINK WATER!
Remember. You don’t have to go outside: Too cold? No problem! Just stay inside. Pop in an old aerobics, P90X, jazzercise, or “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” tape and go to town. If you have a treadmill, stair climber, elliptical, stationary bike, rowing machine, or cross-country trainer then use one of those. Heck, if you have a step and a few dumbbells, you are all set. What? You don’t have any of those things? Ok, use your body weight. Stretch, do yoga, try some push-ups, sit-ups, planks, jumping jacks and burpees! Where are your excuses now?
Go back to school: No, not like Rodney Dangerfield! We just mean try something new. If something interests you, go for it. Maybe there’s an anti-gravity yoga class near you, or maybe martial arts sounds interesting. Do you plan on going to the Bahamas next summer? Take a scuba diving class. These exercise options will work muscles you didn’t know you had while keeping your brain fit, too. Learning new things is also a great way to fight boredom.
Cooler weather is not an excuse to slack off. Take advantage of the crisp air and keep on working out. Your upcoming summer beach body will thank you!
